Buy Local, Buy Homemade this Holiday Season

Chris don’t read this!!!!!!!!

I took the homemade challenge. Buying local for me is extremely important but a very big challenge so with the help of etsy.com I bought the following-

1. Dress in depression era style for Bella’s doll

2. Turtle soap for the girls who love to bathe

3. Dog for Gillian (stuffed yellow lab)

4. Upcycled coffee sleeve (wanna know what this is?)

5. Soap for Chris

6. Cool magnets for Chris

7. Wooden rocking horse for Erin

8. Sensory tubes for Erin

9. Jack Frost character

In addition to etsy, I have also purchased several items from Crossroads Farm Market and a company in Vermont that makes beautiful ornate maple ornaments.

Past and Present Museum

Today, the GrapeBelt Homeschoolers brought in a speaker from the Past and Present Museum.

The girls learned about what a paleontologist is, how to dig for fossils and various fossils that were found locally and throughout the U.S.

Mitten Pattern- Woohoo, I have one done!

Here is the patern I am using- I made a “mistake” which isn’t really a mistake but kids distracted me and I ended purling when I should have knitting so my pattern is a bit different but still very nice.  I’ve got one done!

Winter Solstice, Yule

It is important for children to have a sense that they belong to something bigger, connecting wih that which is divine. My girls and I will celebrate Yule this year as part of our connection to nature. We will welcome to winter months by reflecting on light and dark- celebrating the winter solstice as well as Father Christmas.

Now, anyone who knows me, will appreciate this- I shopped etsy for a winter sprite and found a Jack Frost. Yep, gotta go shopping. *wink*

We will spend the weeks after Thanksgiving, reflecting on how nature provides us with so many gifts and how we can work to protect those and give back by feeding woodland animals, collecting trash and adding animal safe decorations. One morning after Jack Frost’s visit, we will take a winter walk, maybe go sledding and read poems. We will also spend one day without any electrical power (hopefully cooking in our fireplace) and using candles/lanterns. We will make suncakes or sunbread and goodies. Other activities may be- flashlight hide and seek, glow in the dark stars/glitter stars.

Also, becuase we homeschool Bella has asked to study winter animals (I think she is talking about hibernation, will have to clarify) and their homes. Gillian is collecting canned goods to give to our local food bank and we are donating items to MDC Holiday Helper.

Of course there are cookies to bake, bread to make, candy to eat and friends to enjoy.

Leading Our President Down the Early Childhood Play Path

I have a goal- from this week until the inauguration of our 44th President Barack Obama, I will write one letter a week. Each week I will focus on the need for change in our current Early Care and Education field. This weeks topic focused on Play and contact information for key organizations.

Next week I will focus more directly on play, giving examples and more contact information.

Our field is said to be lead by politicians not by those who are leaders in the field. I hope to change this approach. Policy changes that happen at the federal level should come from model policy in the local and state level. Our local and state policies should be directed by us!

Play must not be lost! Please join me and write to our President Elect at www.change.gov

Change can happen, I believe in it!!!!
