What did we do today?

August 7, 2008

Oh my, the summer is flying by. The girls bake bread once or twice a week. Gillian, especially enjoys this activity. The skills needed to knead and pound the bread are the same as the ones used to write words. (bonus!!!!) After nap, we will make pickles. The girls helped Aunt Dot pick cucumbers when we visited on Sunday and then they cut them into spears. While the spears soaked, the girls loaded the dishwasher with the canning jars and set the washer to run.

We are preserving the harvest!!! see post

Study of Spiders began when I offered to read to the girls while they ate lunch. Gillian handed me Do All Spiders Spin Webs? A few factoids later and we moved onto making our own webs. The girls collected two sticks each (a pair) and soon realized that their web wouldn’t work unless they found the right stick. The right stick needed at least one off shoot/branch on order for the webs to take hold. We recreated the Orb Web as best we could. I helped hold the sticks while the girls weaved.

Isabella and Gillian were bickering this morning, so I set them up with some tiny wood mosaic pieces. I gave them grid paper and we talked about patterns. Each girl made their own pattern with marker then they added the wood. We also received our order from Barefoot Books today. (I will blog about that company in a minute.) So, under a shady tree (our big maple in the front yard) we read. After lunch the girls filled out a “worksheet” (very unlikely me) that coordinated with one of the books.

All in all, a good day!

Gillian is sick, so we dropped our trip to pick up Bella’s new glasses and a picnic lunch. Bella read Sylvester and the Pebble .

We created a Story Box and recreated the story. Bella’s grasp of plot and storyline is developing and her reading ability is improving.
