Is There a Difference Between Schooling and Learning?
This thought occurred to me as I read the following blog: Early Stories: On Journalism, Children and Technology
I am also currently reading this book:
What the Rest of Us Can Learn from Homeschooling: How A+ Parents Can Give …By Linda Dobson.
I remember thinking of summer, summer vacation and a break from school. I never truly enjoyed school and really enjoyed my time away from formalized education. How did I manage to separate the idea of learning from playing? What did summer offer me? I think the appeal of being off of school was due to the amount of free time I could spend doing what I wanted. I had very little restrictions on my time and very rules I had to follow. It is rather sad that I couldn’t find school to be fun but it isn’t surprising. Linda Dobson’s book speaks to this concern.
If you have followed my blog you know that I was homeschooling Bella but in reality we were learning together rather than schooling. In fact, we are still learning together, we just have less time to spend together. (Bella doesn’t separate learning from schooling and I hope she continues to love learning.) So maybe the difference between schooling and learning is the intent. Do you plan to teach a child or follow a child’s lead?
More to come, Erin needs me. (she has good timing)
