My Daughter Isn’t A Percentile or Number
In the world of high stakes testing and accountability our powers that be have transformed children from a whole person into a number. I adore my daughters teacher and I know she believes in the value of play, so I am very thankful to her, and appreciate all the effort she gives to teaching to the whole child.
If I had a magic wand I would erase grades, numbers and percentiles from the lives of young children. I know many educators, and public leaders are very unhappy with the No Child Left Behind Act, yet, there is little getting around it. States have to show progress, which means that they must use “something” to determine whether a child succeeds or whether they get left behind. The sad reality is that the entire belief behind “no child left behind” is that no child would be left behind if teachers were allowed to truly teach. In our modernized world we have reduced teachers to manufacturers who put out a product rather than help to grow a child. ….
