Playdough, Geo-odes and Ballet
The girls made a new batch of playdough on Weds. I really like the recipe, it was no-cook, perfect for hot weather and it has stayed moist when left out for the day. (Gillian had moved some into the playroom without my knowledge and we found it friday morning, so I am amazed it wasn’t completely dry.)
I found the recipe on one of my favorite resource books The Busy Toddler Book by Trish Kuffner.
Uncooked Playdough
1 cup cold water
1 cup salt
2 teaspoons veggie oil
food coloring or tempera paint
3 cups flour
2 tablespoons cornstarch
We had mixed ours becuase we like getting our hands “gooey” and it turned out very well. It was a little sticky, so we added a bit more flour and then we were ready to play. The girls have a very large collection of animal cookie cutters from Wilton, they are nice and big, plus we have mallets, rolling pins and other odds n ends for playdough play. we seem to go in playdough spurts…they may play for days and then not for weeks. Of course, playdough should be in every classroom from around age 2 until at least 30. Even adults can enjoy playdough.
 I will upload pictures later…

In the summer there is plenty of opportunity for children to try new things. For several years Bella has been interested in Ballet but due to my work schedule and the dance schedule, I couldn’t find the time to sign her up, so we were very excited to learn that a friend was teaching a 4 week Introduction to Ballet. (thanks Karen!!!)
Bella couldn’t stop smiling at her first class, she was enthralled with the entire dance prcess and has gained a whole new vocabulary.  At the end of the 4 weeks, Bella had a very good sense of the hard but fun work of Ballet and has asked to dance this fall. With the arrival of the new baby in October, we will do our best to get her to class. Of course, we still need to pick a studio and that is proving hard for me… I have definate expectations of what a good dance school should look like.
And finally, our fun with geo-odes. We have a fantastic herb and healing store in Fredonia, Herbs for Life. The girls and I picked up some rocks a few weeks ago when we stopped by. The girls used a hammer and daddy’s help to crack open the geo-odes, then they placed them in water to magnify them. Lots of fun!
