Toy Recalls

If you are not aware of Fisher Price’s recall of many, many Dora/Diego and Elmo toys, here is the link.

Yes, my daughters enjoy Dora and Diego and we have many different sets, which some are involved in the recall. To say that I am fustrated with the toy industry, Fisher Price and our government would be an understatement. Fisher Price was once synonymous with quality, educational and open ended toys but those days are long past and I have seen the company change from child driven toys to battery operated toys.

Supposedly, safety is the first and foremost concern when creating a toy for a child but when companies choose to have their product created over seas, they are risking the one value they hold over all others, SAFETY! Lead paint has been banned for well over 30 years, and the risks associated with lead has been well known for over 30 years. I have to wonder about the responsibility of the companies who choose cheap labor over a child’s health. I also have to wonder about their ethics when they choose to use over seas labor to create their product. No matter how you look at this situation, no one benefits from over seas production of products.

While, I prefer to buy toys that are fairly traded, I also feel that my family has the right to buy toys that they feel are of the child’s interest.  So, I believe I have a responsibility to buy toys that are either made in the USA or if not, are fair traded becuase I feel it is vital to my children’s health and the world’s health. I also feel it is my responsibility to tell companies like Fisher Price that we demand American made products.

I will compose a letter to Fisher Price once I have fully collected my thoughts and calmed myself down. Until then, please consider taking action and letting companies know that are children deserve safe play toys!
