What Is Your Favorite Toy?
Do you remember your favorite toy? Why was it your favorite? What did you learn by playing with the toy?
My favorite toy wasn’t a particular brand name toy but a category of toy. I spent countless hours playing with dolls and play food. I played with my many dolls, dressing, feeding, holding and loving my babies. I would make meals for my baby in my homemade microwave oven (read carboard box with foil covering it) or my cookstove. My cookstove turned bright red when it was “hot” and blue when it was “cool”.
I loved modeling my Mother and how she cared for me. I loved cooking with her, folding laundry with her and just being with her. When I played alone, I could act out these roles in my own “home” and pretend to be a wife and mother. I learned so many important aspects of parenting just by playing, observing and interacting with my Mom.
Play is the child’s way of exploring roles. You can be a mom, dad, restauranteur, mail carrier, store owner and so much more just by playing with various toys.
